If you\’ve outgrown Claude Pro and you\’re staring at Max 20x, the first question is usually the same: what does it actually cost in the UK, and is the jump from Pro (or Max 5x) worth it?
This is a UK money guide — official USD list prices, approximate GBP at current FX, App Store vs web differences, VAT notes for business buyers, and a clear “stay on Pro / pick 5x / only pay for 20x if…” decision path.
Official web prices (verified Oct 2026)
Anthropic lists individual plans in USD on claude.com/pricing and claude.com/pricing/max. Prices shown do not include applicable tax.

Max is monthly only on the web. Pro can be monthly or annual. GBP figures move with FX — treat them as ballpark, then confirm at checkout.
App Store prices in the UK (often higher)
Anthropic’s help centre is explicit: Max web prices are for web subscriptions; mobile pricing may vary by platform. Recent UK App Store snapshots show:
- Max 5x: about £119.99 / month
- Max 20x: about £249.99 / month
That ~£245–£250 Max 20x figure is what many UK iPhone subscribers actually see — substantially more than the ~£150 web USD equivalent. If you can, subscribe on the web at claude.com rather than through the App Store.
What “5x” and “20x” actually mean
Per Anthropic’s Max plan guide:
- Max 5x — five times Pro’s usage allowance per session
- Max 20x — twenty times Pro’s usage allowance per session
Usage resets on a rolling five-hour session window. Paid plans also have a weekly usage limit (reset day/time is fixed per account — see Settings → Usage). Chat, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all share the same pool.
Max also includes higher output limits, priority access at busy times, and early access to advanced features. There is no fixed “messages per day” number — heavy Opus work, long research threads and Claude Code burn the pool faster than short Sonnet chats.
Claude Code is on Pro and Max
Important correction for older guides: Claude Code is included on all paid individual plans (Pro and Max), and it shares your plan’s usage pool. You do not need Max solely to unlock Claude Code.

UK VAT and business buyers
- Anthropic’s published USD figures exclude applicable tax. UK checkout may add VAT depending on how and where you’re billed.
- App Store UK prices are typically VAT-inclusive retail amounts.
- Sole traders and limited companies: if you buy through a channel that issues a proper VAT invoice, you may be able to reclaim input VAT — ask your accountant and keep the invoice. Don’t assume an App Store charge is reclaimable the same way as a B2B invoice.
- Always verify the final GBP total on the payment screen before you confirm.
Max 5x vs Max 20x vs Pro — who should pick what
Stay on Pro if…
- You use Claude most days but rarely hit the five-hour or weekly ceiling
- You mainly need writing, light research and occasional coding through chat or Claude Code
- £15–£20-ish a month (plus tax if any) already feels like the right spend

Pick Max 5x (~$100 web / ~£120 App Store) if…
- You regularly hit Pro limits mid-project
- You run longer research or coding sessions but not all-day, every day
- You want Max features (priority access, higher output) without paying for 20x headroom
Only pay for Max 20x (~$200 web / ~£250 App Store) if…
- You’re a research-heavy UK user: multi-hour deep dives, long document chains, parallel projects that keep burning the weekly cap on 5x
- You’re a coding-heavy UK user: Claude Code + chat all day, large refactors, agent-style loops that exhaust 5x in a normal work week
- Hitting limits costs you real billable time — freelancers and agency leads often find 20x cheaper than lost hours
If you’re unsure, upgrade to 5x first for a billing cycle. You can move between Max tiers; Anthropic prorates upgrades. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current period.

Privacy note for UK users
